Formula

m [kg] = length [m] × width [m] × thickness [mm] × 7.85

7.85 g/cm³ is the density of carbon steel. Use about 7.9–8.0 for austenitic stainless steel and 2.7 for aluminium; the weight changes in proportion.

Tolerances

Hot-rolled plate to EN 10029 is allowed a thickness tolerance, so the actual weight can differ by a few percent from the nominal value. For pricing by weight, check whether your supplier invoices theoretical or weighed tonnage.

For beams, pipes, box sections and whole bills of materials use the steel weight calculator and bill of materials. To find how many parts fit on a sheet, use the dxf sheet nesting (true shape).
