Intro

This video covers motors and electrics: sizing a gear motor, and finding the motor current and the cable size.

Motor sizing

Open Motors and electrics in the main menu. First choose the drive type: rotary table, ball screw axis, belt or roller conveyor, or hoist. Enter the load: the moving mass, and the speed you need. The fields change with the drive type. Then the gearbox ratio and efficiency, the acceleration time and the service factor. You get the running and peak torque at the motor shaft, the motor speed, and a suggested motor size in kilowatts.

Motor current and cable

In Motor current and cable, enter the supply, the voltage, the rated power, the power factor and the efficiency, and choose how the motor is started. Then the cable length, the installation method and the allowed voltage drop. You get the rated and starting current, and the smallest copper cable that meets both the voltage drop and the current-carrying capacity. As everywhere in BenchMaths, open Formula and source to see how each value is calculated.
